Study finds link between early sex and delinquency
NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Teenagers who start having sex significantly earlier than their peers are more likely to commit petty crimes as they get older, according to a U.S. study.
A survey of more than 7,000 youth across the country found that adolescents who had sex about a year or more before the average age had a 20 percent increase in delinquent behavior a year later.
But teenagers who waited longer were only half as likely to act out compared to the average teen.
"It's not that having sex makes you delinquent later, but rather having sex and, specifically having sex earlier than your peers, puts you into this different trajectory of (delinquent) activity," said Stacy Armour, co-author of the study from Ohio State University. READ MORED>

Teacher cuts pupil's tongue with scissors
MILAN (Reuters) - A Milan teacher cut a unruly 7-year-old pupil's tongue with scissors to silence him, police and school officials said on Tuesday.
The child, of North African origin, needed to go to hospital for five stitches to close the wound.
The boy's family has filed suit against the teacher, who has been suspended after last week's incident.
Police are trying to find out whether the injury was inflicted intentionally or was a joke gone wrong, a police source said.

Sinkhole
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala - A 330-foot-deep sinkhole killed at least two teenagers as it swallowed about a dozen homes early Friday and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in a crowded Guatemala City neighborhood. Officials blamed the sinkhole on recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main.
The pit emitted foul odors, loud noises and tremors, shaking the surrounding ground. A rush of water could be heard from its depths, and authorities feared it could widen or others could open up.

Angry tourists break mugger's neck
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) - A group of U.S. tourists, including a former Marine, killed a Costa Rican mugger by breaking his neck after he pulled a gun on them in a Caribbean port, a local police official said on Thursday.
The cruise ship passengers told police they jumped on Wagner Segura, 20, to defend themselves when he pointed a .38 caliber revolver at them near the Caribbean port of Limon on Wednesday, and somehow snapped his neck, regional police director Luis Hernandez said.
Segura died instantly and two other unidentified thieves, one of whom was armed with a knife, fled the scene, Hernandez said.
No charges will be filed against the tourists because police viewed the incident as an act of self-defense. Police questioned and released the group, which rejoined the cruise and left Cost Rica. READ MORE>

Teen 'sport killings' of homeless on the rise
MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (CNN) -- Incidents of teen-on-homeless violence dotted the map last year. Florida racked up at least six such attacks in 2006. (Homeless attack across U.S.)
In Lauderhill, four teens were arrested after they allegedly videotaped themselves beating, dragging, and stealing from a homeless man.
The victim has not been found, but the four face one charge each of strong-armed robbery.
Earlier this month, teens in Corpus Christi, Texas, videotaped themselves attacking a homeless man.
Commander David Torres said police arrested a 15-year-old and are looking for at least one more teenager and a 22-year-old who described on tape what they were about to do before they jumped on the man. (Read full story)
On the other side of the nation, former Oregon State University student Joshua Grimes stands accused of shooting and injuring a homeless man from his perch in a fraternity house window.
He has not yet entered a plea, but, according to a police report, he cried to detectives after the October shooting, telling them, "I didn't mean to shoot him."
At least three homeless people in Kalamazoo, Michigan, reported being attacked by teens on bicycles during a 10-day span in October, according to the homeless coalition.
In Huntsville, Alabama, six teens -- one of them 13 -- beat a homeless man with golf clubs, the coalition reported. But perhaps the most shocking of these examples was 2006's first recorded case of teen-on-homeless violence.
On January 12 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a surveillance camera captured two teens beating a homeless man with bats.
Prosecutors say 17-year-old skateboarder Tom Daugherty, 18-year-old Brian Hooks, a popular hockey team captain, and a third unseen teen, Billy Ammons, a high school dropout, assaulted two more homeless men that night.
One of them was 45-year-old Norris Gaynor. A witness, Anthony Clarke, told police and CNN last year that he saw the three teens approach Gaynor as he slept on a park bench. Daugherty began whacking Gaynor with a bat, Clarke said. (Watch two teenagers beat a cowering homeless man with bats )
As Gaynor lay dying, Ammons shot him with yellow paintballs, later remarking that the beating felt like "teeing off," police said.
Gaynor was beaten so badly his own father didn't recognize him. Facing life in prison, the teens face trial for murder later this year. They have each pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Surgeons who play video games are more skilled: study
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Playing video games appears to help surgeons with skills that truly count: how well they operate using a precise technique, a study said on Monday.
There was a strong correlation between video game skills and a surgeon's capabilities performing laparoscopic surgery in the study published in the February issue of Archives of Surgery.
Laparoscopy and related surgeries involve manipulating instruments through a small incision or body opening where the surgeon's movements are guided by watching a television screen.
Video game skills translated into higher scores on a day-and-half-long surgical skills test, and the correlation was much higher than the surgeon's length of training or prior experience in laparoscopic surgery, the study said.
Out of 33 surgeons from Beth Israel Medical Center in New York that participated in the study, the nine doctors who had at some point played video games at least three hours per week made 37 percent fewer errors, performed 27 percent faster, and scored 42 percent better in the test of surgical skills than the 15 surgeons who had never played video games before.
"It was surprising that past commercial video game play was such a strong predictor of advanced surgical skills," said Iowa State University psychology professor Douglas Gentile, one of the study's authors.
It supports previous research that video games can improve "fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, visual attention, depth perception and computer competency," the study said.

Sirius to merge with XM in $13 billion deal
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio are to merge in a $13 billion tie-up that gives subscribers access to entertainers such as Oprah Winfrey and shock-jock Howard Stern, the companies said on Monday.
The merger, which faces regulatory scrutiny, would create a company with 14 million paying customers with access to a wide array of sports, music and entertainment.
Under the terms of the deal, XM stockholders will get 4.6 shares in Sirius for each XM share held. The merger would create a company with an enterprise value of $13 billion, including $1.6 billion in net debt.
The combination creates a company with combined 2006 revenues of about $1.5 billion based on analysts' consensus estimates, Sirius and XM said in a press release.
Veteran media executive Mel Karmazin, currently Sirius CEO, will be CEO of the combined company, and Gary Parsons, now chairman of XM, will hold the same position in the new company. It said Hugh Panero, XM CEO, will continue in his current role until the merger closes.
"This combination is the next logical step in the evolution of audio entertainment," said Karmazin in a statement. He said it will create "unprecedented choice for consumers."
The deal will face tough regulatory scrutiny. The satellite radio licenses prevent one entity from owning them, however Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin said last month that its rules are open to change.

Scientists Grow Mouse Teeth From Single Cells
JAPAN (HealthDay News) -- Using tissue regeneration technology, Japanese researchers have been able to grow a new tooth from single mouse tooth cells and use it to replace natural teeth in a mouse.
The achievement is "a breakthrough in the development of bioengineered organs and proposes a novel concept for the organ replacement in future regenerative therapies," lead researcher Takashi Tsuji, associate professor, Department of Biological Technology, Tokyo University of Science, said in a prepared statement.
Reporting in the Feb. 19 online issue of the journal Nature Methods, Tsuji's team started by using the two cell types that form teeth -- mesenchymal and epithelial cells. They grew sufficient quantities of each of these cells and then injected them into a drop of collagen. This eventually developed into a budding tooth, which they transplanted into the cavity left by an extracted tooth in a mouse.
The new tooth developed normally and had the same composition and structure as natural teeth, the researchers reported. Ultimately, such bioengineered teeth could be used instead of inlays or synthetic implants, they said.
In addition, the new method might be applied to re-growing other organs. In fact, the researchers used similar methods to re-grow a mouse hair follicle that would eventually form a whisker. "This method would be able to adopt the reconstitution of a wide variety of organs such as a kidney and liver," Tsuji said. READ MORE>

Death is a central theme in his work. He is best known for his Natural History series, in which dead animals (such as a shark, a horse or a pig) are preserved, sometimes cut-up, in formaldehyde.
His most iconic work is the peice "The Physical Impossibility Of Death In the Mind Of Someone Living", a 14ft tiger shark frozen in formaldehyde in a vitrine. Its sale for nearly £7million, made him the second most expensive living artist.

Drug rape myth exposed as study reveals binge drinking is to blame
Women who claim to be victims of 'date-rape' drugs such as Rohypnol have in fact been rendered helpless by binge-drinking, says a study by doctors.
They found no evidence that any woman seeking help from emergency doctors because their drinks were allegedly spiked had actually been given these drugs.
Around one in five tested positive for recreational drugs while two-thirds had been drinking heavily.
The findings further erode the theory that there is widespread use of Rohypnol and GHB, another drug said to be favoured by predatory rapists.
Last month a personal safety campaigner claimed that Rohypnol had never been used to assist a sexual assault in the UK. Doctors carrying out the latest study at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital said it was far more likely women were claiming their drinks had been spiked as an "excuse" for binge-drinking.
The 12-month study was based on 75 patients - mostly women - treated in casualty who told doctors their drinks had been tampered with in pubs or clubs.
But tests for drugs such as Rohypnol, GHB and ketamine found nothing, says the study published in the Emergency Medicine Journal.
It showed 65 per cent of women had 160mg of alcohol in their blood - twice the 80mg drink/drive limit - and a quarter were three times over the limit. Although all the patients denied taking drugs such as cocaine and amphetamine, one fifth tested positive.

No Escape: Male Rape in US Prisons
Report about male prisoner-on-prisoner sexual abuse in the United States, including letters from inmates.
I've been sentenced for a D.U.I. offense. My 3rd one. When I first came to prison, I had no idea what to expect. Certainly none of this. I'm a tall white male, who unfortunately has a small amount of feminine characteristics. And very shy. These characteristics have got me raped so many times I have no more feelings physically. I have been raped by up to 5 black men and two white men at a time. I've had knifes at my head and throat. I had fought and been beat so hard that I didn't ever think I'd see straight again. One time when I refused to enter a cell, I was brutally attacked by staff and taken to segragation though I had only wanted to prevent the same and worse by not locking up with my cell mate. There is no supervision after lockdown. I was given a conduct report. I explained to the hearing officer what the issue was. He told me that off the record, He suggests I find a man I would/could willingly have sex with to prevent these things from happening. I've requested protective custody only to be denied. It is not available here. He also said there was no where to run to, and it would be best for me to accept things . . . . I probably have AIDS now. I have great difficulty raising food to my mouth from shaking after nightmares or thinking to hard on all this . . . . I've laid down without physical fight to be sodomized. To prevent so much damage in struggles, ripping and tearing. Though in not fighting, it caused my heart and spirit to be raped as well. Something I don't know if I'll ever forgive myself for.

Illustrated Russian Army Stories
“Being complexly tied and be held in such position for hours” We’ve mentioned a few times that things in Russian army are really awful. Soldiers, mainly from poor families don’t have rights at all and are being treated like no-human-beings. Even worse.
The main tradition in Russian (previously in Soviet) Army is a hierarchy when elder soldiers feel themselves like masters and fresh soldiers are slaves for them. Just because some time before these elder soldiers were slaves for their masters and prayed their nights to become “masters” and start torturing the new slaves. "

Former Playmate Smith dies at 39
Anna Nicole Smith, was an American model, actress and celebrity who first gained popularity as Playboy magazine's 1993 Playmate of the Year.
Here's a clip of her the 1998 film "Exposed", back when she was still an erotic porn star.
One dead husband and cancelled reality show later, she had hit the bottom of the barrel and started campaigning for trim spa. Leading to one of her most famous appearances at the 2004 American Music Awards.
She later gave birth to her second child through c-section, recording the entire event for an Entertainment Tonight exclusive.
After the birth of the baby, a paternity suit followed in which a judge forced Smith to take a DNA test. Internet gambling pioneers BoDog.com gave betting odds on who the father was.
Her last gift to the world was 2006 sci-fi comedy masterpiece: Illegal Aliens. Co-starring Joanie Laurer(Chyna), it's the story of three aliens who morph into super-hot babes and arrive to protect the earth from the intergalactic forces of evil. The trailer truly does the movie justice.
I am honestly really sad to see her go. I feel like there were still so many laughs to be had at her expense.

Canadian Soil
This is a picture of a Canadian soldier stationed in Afghanistan with his tiny plot of grass in front of his tent. He asked his wife to send him dirt (Canadian soil), fertilizer, and some grass seed so that he can have the sweet aroma, and feel the grass grow beneath his feet. When the men of the squadron have a mission that they are going on, they take turns walking through the grass on the Canadian soil to bring them good luck.
